Communication is critical to a person's ability to interact with people in his/her environment for a variety of purposes, e.g. gaining attention, making request, socializing, expressing feelings, gaining knowledge and so on. People communicate in numerous ways dependent upon their physical and cognitive abilities. It is the mission of the Communication Services staff at BHC to enable each person who lives at BHC to communicate effectively with their peers and people with whom they associate.

Our services include individual and group training in speech and language development, cognitive-linguistics, voice, fluency, American Sign Language, reading writing, use of augmentative/alternative communication systems, aural rehabilitation, socialization, and dysphagia. Staff training and consultation is also provided to promote development and/or carryover in the natural environment. To accomplish this task, the Communication Team is comprised of a diverse group of specialists and paraprofessionals, including, Speech & Language Aides, Interpreters for the Deaf, Speech-Language Assistants and Speech-Language Pathologists and a contracting Audiologist.
