    Welcome to Fulton State Hospital

Fulton State Hospital can claim the distinction of being the oldest public mental health facility west of the Mississippi River, having admitted its first patient in 1851. The treatment and care of persons with mental illnesses has changed greatly during the last century and a half. Throughout the years, the hospital's philosophy has remained constant -- to provide quality care to Missourians in a manner that respects the dignity of the individual with a goal of returning the individual to a full and active role in the community. Fulton State Hospital is a 496-bed facility accredited by the Joint Commission and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

" What I would like people to learn from me is, the definition of stigma in those with a mental illness is, the rejection and blaming of people with a mental illness whose conditions are considered so fearful and disgraceful that they are judged to deserve their fate." - RESPECT Institute Speaker
