Services
When a child or adolescent is admitted to Hawthorn for treatment, an interdisciplinary team assesses the problem and develops the individualized treatment plan. The plan outlines the goals and objectives for treatment; indicates how the goals will be met; projects the type of aftercare needed; and details how it will be provided. The plan addresses the medical, psychological, social, educational, vocational and recreational needs of the child and is reviewed and revised at various stages of treatment.

Inpatient Treatment Program
Hospitalization is sometimes necessary to provide short-term intensive treatment in a secure environment with the goal of returning a child to his or her home and community as soon as possible. Children and adolescents have separate living accommodations and classrooms. Otherwise, Hawthorn inpatients of all ages interact as they might in their natural environment.
Residential Treatment Program
Sometimes a youth may need longer treatment in a structured environment. The residential program provides intensive therapeutic services for adolescents (ages 13-18) for an average of six months. Focus of the residential program is to successfully return the youth to their home. The multi-disciplinary treatment team works with families and agencies to teach adolescents how to develop positive, self-directed behaviors; improve coping skills; and increase their independence and responsibility within their community.
Cooperative Day Treatment Program
This Cooperative Day Treatment Program (CDTP) is an innovative effort of special educators, mental health
providers and families addressing the needs of Special School District students
who could benefit from a short-term, intensive therapeutic educational
program. Purpose of the program is to provide skills to
students who are emotionally disturbed so they can realize their potential academically, personally and socially.
CDTP serves children who range in age from six to 16 years old and who reside in
St. Louis County. To qualify for this program, students must have at least
an average intellectual functioning; must not exhibit behaviors that jeopardize the
safety or welfare of themselves or others; and they must be committed to the
process of change in their lives. Family participation is mandatory. DMH and Special School District jointly fund this unique partnership.
Referrals for the program come through the St. Louis County Special
School District.
