MoCAN stands for "Missouri Community Advocates Network". MoCAN creates teams of dedicated, trained volunteers to go out into all avenues of the community, from schools to businesses to churches to state departments to service providers. Why?

  • To inform and educate the  community of the potential of individuals with developmental disabilities

  • To encourage connections of individuals with developmental disabilities with individuals in the community

  • To foster understanding, regard, and active aid to improve the quality of life  of individuals with developmental disabilities

  • To build esteem and respect of all individuals

  • To instill responsibility and  contribution of all individuals to the community

  • To extend freedom, hope and choice to all individuals

  • To nurture dignity, equality and autonomy for all individuals

  • To create an atmosphere that allows  all individuals the right to imagine and aspire to their dreams.

  The Missouri Community Advocates  Network is seeking a diverse group of highly motivated and enthusiastic men and women to volunteer to be a team of trained trainers to take information and understanding into your entire community for the benefit of all. A limited number of volunteers will be selected. Preference will be given, but not limited to:
  • Adults with developmental disabilities
  • Family members of individuals with developmental disabilities

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to devote full time service for one year
  • Must not have other commitments such as part-time employment or enrollment in any school classes for duration of service
  • Must have transportation
  • Must be able to handle primary functions of the job
  • Must be able to attend all relevant meetings
  • Must be able to attend all training sessions
  • Must have sufficient reading, writing, and speaking skills

 

As an AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteer with MoCAN, you will learn and in turn train others how to make a difference in the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.
