    Forensic Pre-Trial Program

What are the components of the Forensic Pre-Trial Program?

There are four components to the Forensic Pre-trail Program at St. Louis Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center:

    1. The first component is the Pretrial Evaluation Service, which performs evaluations of criminal defendants from the eastern region of Missouri. Evaluations address competency to stand trial, mental state at the time of an alleged crime, and other criminal issues (confessions, sentencing, probation & parole, etc.) Most evaluations are provided as an outpatient service, but is the evaluation requires consumers being hospitalized it may occur here.
    2. The second component is the Competency Restoration Service. This service is provided here, as an inpatient program. It is designed to treat mental illness and educate consumers about the courts and how to work with your attorney. Many consumers begin their stat at St. Louis Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center designated as Incompetent to Stand trial (IST.)
    3. The third component is for those few consumers who are judged by the courts as Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI.) Participation in this SLPRC program is also based on a consumer's overall level of functioning being consistent with other residents in the program. Participation in the program will help consumers obtain the skills needed to return to the community or move to a rehabilitation ward or cottage at the facility.

    How does the program work?

A unique plan will be worked out with each consumer, called an Individual Treatment Plan (ITP.) This focuses on what the consumer and the consumer's treatment team identify as necessary for you to leave our care. The treatment team members each have an important role in the consumer's care and in helping the consumer.

Consumers admitted for evaluation only may receive treatment only if they want it or if they are dangerous to self or others. consumers committed for restoration of competency, the judge can order them to comply with treatment, including medication. In either situation, treatments will be chosen to meet individual needs.
