Volunteer Services
Volunteers have been a prime force behind better treatment for the mentally ill. They encourage public concern for better facilities. They have built the chaplain program, assisted with the activity cart, and hold A.A. meetings.
There are many opportunities for community volunteers and student educational experience available throughout the facility. Volunteers and students at SMMHC use their talents and energy to support the efforts of professional staff. Training and education is provided to familiarize volunteers with hospital policies and rules as well as patient interactions. Positions are available for volunteers 18 years and older from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.
Volunteers can provide the social acceptance and reassurance clients need to support their efforts. As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to gain training and experience in your area of interest and make a difference in someone's life.
Volunteer and student opportunities include but are not limited to:
- Adult Literacy/GED Program
- Craft Closet/Gift Shop Volunteer
- Office/Clerical Volunteer
- Psychology Department Special Projects and Services
- Recreation Center Volunteer

Volunteer Training
After an initial interview and tour of the facility, volunteers will discuss their skills and interests with the Director of Volunteer Services or Department Head and review a list of volunteer opportunities. Upon choosing a position, the volunteer will attend a training session to familiarize him/her with admission and treatment procedures as well facility policies. Once the volunteer has completed the initial training, he/she will begin to provide support in the area of their choice. Additional on-the-job training will be provided by the direct supervisor as required. We believe volunteers can be most effective when they are working in an area of interest, and are encouraged to think carefully where they choose to donate their time. Should they at any point wish to change their assignment, or adjust your schedule, they may consult with the Director of Volunteer Services. It is important that your experience be a rewarding one.
